I excuses for possible inexactnesses of translation.)
The city of Almaty is
located in a southeast part of Republic Kazakhstan, in the north
of mountain spurs of Tjan-Shanj, at bottom of northern slope of
Zailijsky Ala-Tau at height 600 - 900 metres above sea level, in
valleys of the rivers Big and Small Almatinki (to look a site on
a map). The history of Almaty
has begun in 1854 when military fortress "Vernoe"
has been based. In the summer 1855 to new strengthening there
has arrived the first party of the Siberian Cossacks and
settlers from the central Russia. In 1859 in a city there were
5000 inhabitants. In april, 1867 strengthening is renamed into
a city Vernyj (True, Reliable) - an administrative centre of again created
Semy-Rechensky area. In march, 1921, a year later after a
definitive establishment of the Soviet power, a city Vernyj have
renamed into Alma-Ata. In 1926 the population made 45
thousand persons. Now person is more than 1,6 million. Almaty in Kazakhstan
the same that St.-Petersburg in Russia. The former capital, the
cultural centre of all country. The great attention in 80-90th
years was given to a city architecture and have started to be
given again, after 2000. During the last years built a considerable quantity of buildings of
original architecture, basically elite habitation. But whether
they will resist at earthquakes expected in the future? Bless God that they did not
decay...
In
October, 1966 by the directed explosion formed the dam in river Small-Almaty
gorge which has rescued a city from an earth flow in 1973 has
been. In december, 1972 at
bottom of this dam the sports complex "Medeo" with an
artificial skating rink is opened.
